Fourth of July Celebrations: Top U.S. Cities for Firework Displays

FireworksFor most Americans a Fourth of July celebration is not complete without fireworks. From the crackling sound they make as they soar through the air to the amazing burst of light and color that illuminates the sky, there is just something about these explosive pyrotechnics that never cease to amaze us. Extravagant firework displays have become a wonderful tradition to honor the birth of our great nation and many towns and cities ramp up all year to make sure that their show is nothing short of spectacular.

We have put together a list of the most impressive firework displays and Fourth of July celebrations across the United States.

Washington, DC- National Independence Day Parade includes marching bands strolling down Constitution Avenue as the opener of the celebration in our nation’s capitol. The day also includes A Capitol Fourth Concert which features appearances by TV and movie stars and the performance of a variety of music icons. The concert takes place on the West Lawn of the US Capitol Building. The festivities conclude with a fireworks extravaganza launched from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool which creates a magnificent display of illuminations behind the Washington Monument.

Philadelphia- Wawa Welcome America! This city’s celebration features a festival that lasts for 10 days.  The final day of the festival includes a live concert by a national act, this year the Goo Goo Dolls will perform. The show-stopping fireworks display concludes the festival as they are launched from the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

Boston- Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular holds true to its name. The Boston Pops perform a concert each year as well as provide the musical backdrop for the fireworks show which takes place along the Charles River. Each year the event also has a special musical guest (last year it was country music star Toby Keith), this year’s guest has not been announced yet.

New Orleans, Louisiana- Go 4th on the River features a firework extravaganza that takes place over the mighty Mississippi River as awe-inspiring pyrotechnics are shot from dueling barges. Patriotic classics are played as the beautiful colors light up the night sky.

Houston, Texas- Freedom Over Texas Everything is bigger in Texas, and that holds true of firework displays as well. Freedom Over Texas is one of the largest firework displays over land in the United States. The annual event includes an outdoor festival which starts with country music artists performing on the Freedom Stage and it ends with a dynamic and elaborate fireworks display.

New York City- Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks show is sure to be breathtaking with over 40,000 colorful fireworks choreographed with a musical score of pop favorites and American classics. The amazing display will take place over the Hudson River off the West side of Manhattan.

Pasadena, California- Americafest 2011 is a full day of celebrations that take place in and around the Rose Bowl. During the day there is an outdoor festival and the party moves inside the stadium in the evening for a rockin’ concert. The Americafest Fireworks are the grand finale and can be seen from miles around the stadium.

Fort Bragg, North Carolina- July 4th Celebration is held at the largest military base in the United States.  This year The Charlie Daniels Band and Little Big Town will perform live and there will be a Parachute Team Demonstration from the 82d Division. An over the top firework display concludes the celebration and is sure to leave everyone beaming with patriotic pride.
