We’re coming up on a time of year where a lot of people have “annual” parties: Super Bowl, Mardi Gras, Valentine’s Day. If you host the same party every year, it can be hard not to feel like you’re falling into a rut. On the other hand, if your annual party has become a tradition, you don’t want to shake things up too much. No one wants to come to your Super Bowl party and discover that you didn’t make their favorite Seven Layer Dip this year.
One way to shake things up a little is to have a change of venue. Moving the party to someone else’s house will automatically shake things up. A rented venue may be even better as it frees you up from the before and after party clean up, giving you a chance to work on other parts of the party.
Why not add a couple of new people to the guest list? Having some new faces in the crowd can re-energize an event.
A change in menu is the riskiest way to shake things up. So many of our traditions are tied up in what we eat. You can’t have a Mardi Gras party without a King Cake, but maybe someone else could make it this year? Or, maybe you could have a King Cake and another traditional southern dish like Chess Pie?
The most dramatic way to shake things up is by adding entertainment to the mix. If you have a Super Bowl party every year why not make things more fun this year by hiring a caricature artist to do caricatures? Or hire a professional face painter to get everyone rooting for their team in style.
Remember, if you want to really change things, by changing the venue or even cancelling an annual party you’ll want to let people know as far ahead of time as possible. If you want to book live entertainment, you’ll also want to start researching the idea early.
Do you have any parties that you feel like are falling into a rut? What are your suggestions for livening things up?
